Code of Conduct for Digital News Websites


The Digital News Publishers Association has voluntarily developed a Code of Conduct for its members, set out below, which reflects their commitment to responsible digital publishing. It also reconsiders and reviews incidents that prohibit the distribution or transmission of news, current affairs and other content, as well as protecting the freedom of expression and other constitutional freedoms guaranteed by Article 19(1) (a) of the Indian Constitution. .


 This Code aims to establish high standards and ethical values ​​in digital news publishing, and is not intended to interfere with the day-to-day operations of news publishers, who are completely independent of editorial and content selection.


 The basic objective of this code of conduct is to maintain the norms of digital publishing i.e. news portal, and also to protect the freedom of journalists and publishers.


 Digital news website follows the Indian Constitution and all the laws here. In addition, it complies with more than 30 laws related to the media industry, the provisions of the IPC and CrPC relating to media and the Information Technology Act, 2000.

 Digital news websites also strictly adhere to accepted standards of journalism and its conventions and maintain the highest standards of professional conduct. There are several layers to this self-regulation code, which also applies to newsrooms, journalists and editors.

 Members who believe in accuracy, transparency and fairness should refrain from publishing baseless or distorted material. Pre-publication verification should be mandatory. Defamation should be avoided. It should be necessary to follow the laws and regulations.

 right to answer

 The side of the people who are being accused must be mentioned in the news report, article. If it is not found at that time, the reply or side found at a later time should be added to the news.

 If there is a change in the news or it is requested by an affiliate, it should be done in an appropriate way. The time and date of the update should also be mentioned in the news.

 delete or edit news

 If false or false information is found in any news, then that part of the news should be edited or removed if the person or party concerned comes forward and gives correct information including necessary documents.


 If the entire news is found to be false, incorrect, then that news or article should be removed.


 respect intellectual property rights


 Copyright should be respected in text, pictures, drawings, cartoons etc. If copyrighted material is used, prior permission must be obtained and the publication must acknowledge ethical and proprietary rights.

 If the permission requires payment of a fee or royalty, the payment must be made.

 Third party trade marks and service marks may not be used except with prior permission or only if such use is deemed appropriate.

 In case of Intellectual Property Infringement - After receiving any request and obtaining the required documents, the relevant material should be edited, removed or if necessary withdrawn.

 Care should be taken in reporting sensational cases and crime. The scope of proving the innocence of the accused should be left. Commentary and speculation on the evidence, the conduct of the witness and the witness, the accused and the victim and their respective conduct should be avoided. Reporting in such cases should be factual and fair.

 Sexual abuse in the workplace, child abuse, rape (where the accused or victim is a minor), matrimonial matters, riots and communal disputes / clashes, divorce and child care rights, adoption cases, etc. Special care should be taken while reporting.

 Section 67, 67A and 67B of the Information Technology Act, 2000, which provides for punishment for pornographic material, sexual material and material depicting children in such a way.

 Training and Awareness Program


 Training and awareness programs will be organized from time to time for the editorial staff about the existing laws including the Constitution of India. More than 30 laws related to media, such as Prohibition of misrepresentation of women, Copyright Act, Right to Information Act, IPC, CrPC, Civil and Criminal Defamation, IPR, Juvenile Justice, POCSO, relevant related to reporting on rape and molestation Employees will be made aware of the provision, workplace harassment, crimes related to caste or gender, domestic violence cases.


 The matter of identification of victims and perpetrators (if minor) should be strictly avoided.

 Information about the photographs of the victims, their place of residence, workplace etc. should not be given.

 Special precaution and caution should be taken at every time while reporting matters relating to communal or religious disputes/ clashes. Such news should be published only after due verification of facts and they should be presented with care and restraint, so as to ensure an atmosphere which is conducive to promoting communal harmony, peace and tranquility.

 Special care should be taken in reporting on courts and judicial matters. To create awareness among editorial staff about legislative privileges and correct reporting of court hearings, judicial matters etc. It should be ensured that both the side of the victim and the accused are included in the news and should not be commented upon.

 Privacy should be respected, especially those people who are not in public life.
